Mediation for families in Barnet
Barnet is London’s most populous borough, and its family court – the Barnet Civil and Family Courts Centre in Finchley – is in it. We work with Jewish families in Golders Green and Hendon, Iranian, Indian and Gujarati families in Edgware and Kingsbury, and long-settled households in High Barnet and Mill Hill. Many arrive with a religious divorce in progress as well as a civil one; mediation can bring the two into line.
Because the court is local, Barnet couples sometimes assume a hearing is the quick option. It is not: a contested children application takes months to reach a final hearing, and the judge will ask why you did not mediate. A MIAM online takes an hour, and most Barnet couples we see settle in two to four joint sessions – online, or in person in Barnet by appointment, in a private, neutral room.

Which court hears your case depends on where the children live, and the court confirms it when you apply. Before a C100 for children or a Form A for finances it expects a MIAM first, and our certificate is accepted at every family court in England and Wales. If proceedings have already started, mediation can run alongside them.

Questions people in Barnet ask
Is the court really in Barnet?
Yes – the Barnet Civil and Family Courts Centre is on Regents Park Road in Finchley, and hears Barnet, Enfield and Haringey cases. A MIAM is expected before most applications.
Can mediation run alongside a get or a religious divorce?
Yes. The mediator stays neutral and does not give religious rulings, but the timing and terms of a religious divorce are often part of what the couple need to agree, and a civil settlement can be shaped around it.
Is the Government voucher available?
Yes. Where your case involves arrangements for children, the Family Mediation Voucher gives up to £500 per family towards joint sessions. It is applied to your invoice, so you pay the difference.
