Mediation for families in Wales

Family law is the same in Wales as in England – one jurisdiction, one set of family courts, one Family Mediation Council – so a MIAM certificate from an accredited mediator is valid at Cardiff Civil and Family Justice Centre, Swansea, Newport, Wrexham and every other Welsh family court. Cafcass Cymru, rather than Cafcass, is the body that reports to the court about children in Wales, and the Parenting Plans we produce work with its approach.

We work with Welsh families online, from Cardiff and the Valleys to Swansea, Carmarthen and the north. Most people choose an online MIAM because it can be held within days, at a time that suits them, from home. Joint sessions are the same – usually two to four of them, online, with in-person appointments by arrangement. The Family Mediation Voucher – up to £500 per family where children are involved – applies in Wales exactly as in England.

Which court hears your case depends on where the children live, and the court confirms it when you apply. Before a C100 for children or a Form A for finances it expects a MIAM first, and our certificate is accepted at every family court in England and Wales. If proceedings have already started, mediation can run alongside them.

How it works

1. A free 15-minute chatTell us what is going on. We tell you honestly whether mediation could work.
2. Your MIAMAn hour with the mediator. If both of you want to go ahead, we book the first joint session.
3. Joint sessionsOnline. Same room or separate rooms – your choice.
4. A written recordA Parenting Plan or financial Memorandum of Understanding. It is not itself a court order; a legal adviser can turn it into one where needed.
